Before you read this....I have a confession to make.
I don't usually work with artists.
I know, I know - I sound like a snob. Or maybe a greedy capitalist pig. I've been called both.
But you know the usual yarn about artists - they're picky. They're particular. They're starving so they can't pay the bills. Considering that I help people pull money from the web, this last adjective was particularly worrisome.
So when Melinda Barta (Full Dislcaimer: Melinda is my wife) asked me to create her website, I had to put her through a serious interview.
She had all the potential for a great success story on the web, but I had to be sure. I also had to be sure that working together wasn't going to ruin our marriage (ha ha).
Before she even thought of getting on the web she had already been:
- A published author before her 25th birthday
- The editor of a magazine before the age of 30
- Making appearances in multiple Tee-Vee shows
- Teaching people of all ages at some of the world's finest craft schools
So with my "insider" information and this list in my hands, I was pretty sure she wansn't your typical artist. But I had to be sure, so I asked her a second question.

Start to look around on the web. Notice how many fancy-pants Flash websites there are with their bells and whistles. Then come back around to how many "seemingly simple" websites there are on the web.
Why do you think there are so many fancy-pants Flash websites out there? Because they make a ton of money...for the people who create them.
That's not my approach.
The websites I create are magnetic. People come back to them, again and again. More importantly, they create money for their owners. And no matter if you're a formerly "starving" artist, or a successful business person, that's a good thing for you.
